The solutions based on phenol (also known as carbolic or phenic acid) are the most comprehensive type of chemical peel available today. Already known at the time of the First World War, when they were used to disinfect and anesthetize the skin, they were gradually adopted also by aesthetic medicine to treat deep wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, scars and damage from photo-aging .
In 2016 the pharmaceutical group Skin Tech , leader in the field of chemical peels and professional cosmetology, has launched among others two new products based on phenol: Easy Phen Light and Lip & Eyelid Formula . Both allow to act on the deeper layers of the skin, treating with extraordinary effectiveness very mature and / or strongly damaged skin in targeted or more extended areas of the face.
EASY PHEN LIGHT
Composed of an oily solution of phenol (30%) and trichloroacetic acid / TCA (23%) , it is indicated to treat severe and advanced forms of skin photo-aging (Glogau 3 or 4), hyperpigmentation, acne and scars .
It allows to perform a peeling at the level of the superficial reticular dermis , acting on medium-deep wrinkles with an excellent rejuvenating effect on the entire area of the face.
The protocol of use provides a preparatory phase of two weeks before treatment, in which the patient is required to apply 3 vv / day of a whitening cream to prevent possible hyperpigmentation in the post-treatment phase and to attenuate those already present.
During the actual treatment , the skin is cleaned with a detergent solution based on alcohol and acetone (50% each), which prepares it for the application of Easy Phen Light . To calibrate the reaction of the skin to the product, the face is first divided into five areas to be treated separately (photo) and in progression: forehead, chin, the two cheekbones and finally the central area, which includes the nose and upper lip. The solution is then spread with a cotton swab starting from the first area, distributing it with slow and circular movements until a uniform frost is obtained . The following steps involve the application of a specific post-peeling mask and finally of bismuth gallate powder , an intense yellow compound that wipes and creates a protective and anti-inflammatory crust.
The first six days after treatment are the most delicate skin regeneration phase , which occurs below the protective bismuth crust to be preserved until the end of the process. Any redness and infection can be counteracted at this stage with the topical application of Vaseline.
On the seventh day the reconstructive phase of the superficial skin layers is normally concluded, so it is possible to remove the bismuth and proceed with the first cosmetic applications (creams and make-up).
Until the 15th day after treatment the skin protection, still very sensitive, is entrusted to the patient through the application of targeted cosmetic products : a mild detergent for daily cleaning, a specific cream to prevent or treat any rashes and a cream SPF 30 to apply 3 vv / day. After this phase, the sunscreen is placed side by side for three months with a nourishing night cream and a whitened cream applied 2 vv / day to prevent pigmentation changes.
Sun exposure is highly discouraged in the six months following treatment .
LIP & EYELID FORMULA
Lip & Eyelid Formula is a deeper peeling treatment than Easy Phen Light, suitable for areas of the face most strongly affected by weather and sun damage: the area around the lips (eg the so-called “bar code” wrinkles) ) and the eyelid area .
The oil solution used is based on phenol alone , at a higher concentration (60%) which allows penetration into the deep reticular dermis . In this way it is also possible to treat very marked wrinkles , typical of the most advanced stages of photo-induced skin aging (Glogau 4) .
As with Easy Phen Light, in the two weeks before the treatment a whitening cream 3vv / day is provided. In case of peeling in the labial area, an antiviral is also prescribed beforehand if a case history of Herpes Simplex is obtained from the patient’s anamnesis.
The solution with phenol is applied as previously described. The bismuth gallate rind should also be kept in this case for seven days throughout the skin regeneration phase, and any infections may be contrasted with local applications of vaseline and antibiotic therapy. After removal of the protective crust, it is possible to begin with the daily application of protective cosmetic products, to be prolonged up to three months from the date of treatment.
